WEST DES MOINES, Iowa, Oct. 22, 2025 — Athene has announced a $500,000 donation to Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity to help expand access to affordable housing for families in central Iowa. The announcement coincided with Habitat’s annual Key Awards event, where Athene was recognized for its leadership in advancing affordable housing solutions in the community.

The new $500,000 donation will be distributed over five years and brings Athene’s total contributions to $1 million in recent years. Athene previously gifted $500,000 to Habitat’s Framing Our Future capital campaign. According to Habitat for Humanity, the initiative will help more than 900 central Iowans access safe, affordable housing.

“As a leading retirement services company, Athene is in the business of building better futures,” said Grant Kvalheim, CEO of Athene. “Habitat for Humanity shares that same purpose by helping families build stability and security through homeownership. We are proud to support Habitat and the work they do to help build better tomorrows in the communities we call home.”

Kristi Kaye Burma, Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer at Athene, has served on the Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity board for nearly three years. Her involvement has given her a firsthand look at the organization’s impact on the families it serves.

“Habitat’s impact goes far beyond providing a roof overhead,” Burma said. “Families partner with Habitat every step of the way. They invest their own time and effort to help build their homes while also gaining financial education and the skills to sustain homeownership.”

In addition to its financial commitment, Athene’s employees volunteer with Habitat throughout the year. Last year, Athene volunteered over 700 hours with the organization. Athene has already surpassed that total in 2025, volunteering more than 760 hours.

“We are grateful for the partnership we have created with Athene,” said Lance Henning, CEO of Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity. “The combination of financial support and volunteerism from Athene has been a powerful boost in expanding affordable housing in the region. Together, we are creating greater stability, opportunity and hope for the families we serve.”
